Geology SS17
n.
Geology is the study of the Earth, the materials of which it is made, the structure of those materials, & the processes acting upon them. It includes the study of organisms that have inhabited our planet. An important part of geology is the study of how Earth's materials, structures, processes & organisms have changed over time.
"Geology" is my debut collection, inspired by – on a macro scale - the idea of fleeing the noise & pressures of urban living & on a micro scale, a cry for help; to escape the suffocation my reality had been up until that debut. From a strained quality of life to sleeping on a friend’s couch for over a year, the collection - instead of a subject to research - was an introspective exercise, & a welcome therapy.
Focusing around the guiding phrase ‘feminine utilitarianism’, the collection focuses on Karoo colours of clay burgundy, blood red, burnt orange & blends into various skyline blues & purples. Hiking provides a reference for the trims & accessories, as seen on a burgundy knitted dress which has a neckline featuring a rope that suspends the dress itself & a carabiner hiking clip that emerges from under a long slit as its wearer walks. Another crepe blouse, with orange red & black swirls, takes its inspiration from the common carp (Koi Fish).
